Housing shortage is a serious problem in many parts of the world, especially like Tokyo, HongKong, Shanghai those large cities in Asia. Due to the reality, many people are forced to live in terrible condition or pay high rents. To ease Hong Kong’s affordable housing problems, a Hong Kong-based studio James Law Cybertecture try to develop affordable micro-housing in 2.5m diameter concrete water pipe. The design utilizes the strong concrete structure to house a mirco-living apartment for one/two persons with fully kitted out living, cooking and bathroom spaces inside 100 sq.ft.
However that will work? The Opod Tube Houses come with a foldable bench that doubles as a bed, space for a microwave (yeah, sorry, no real cooking appliances), mini-fridge, and a bathroom area at the rear. One of the most important advantage of the OPod Tube House is that due to its size, it can fit almost anywhere - even the narrow spaces between buildings. Their ease of portability also means that they can be transported to different areas, as needed. Moreover, due to its fairly light weight for a house (22 tons), the installation costs are kept low due to the absence of brackets or bolts needed to secure them.
As for the price, accoring to its design compnay, the OPod Tube House can be built for a little over $15,000 and rented out for about $400 a month, which makes it perfect for young people who can’t afford private housing or who are looking for a temporary living solution.
